To become a better manager or a better leader we have to continue to learn. We can learn from successes, but far more often it’s the failures that push us to do some deep self-reflection. We need challenges to grow – it’s the only way. It’s easy when things are easy, but that’s not what leadership is about.
Some studies have shown that the most reliable indicator and predictor of leadership is the ability to deal with adversity and emerge stronger and more committed. Perhaps you’re being tested right now. Perhaps things don’t feel like they’re going your way. These moments are time for self-reflection. These moments time to challenge your beliefs and assumptions.
What are your most common challenges? Have you ever studied them? Do you tend to be frustrated by the same things, or similar things, over and over? What other patterns do you see? How might you be contributing in creating problems for yourself?
Shift your perspective when you encounter a problem. Leaders find opportunity where others see dead ends. To see things clearly, to see the opportunity, we have to reframe our experience. We have to work on shifting our focus away from ‘problems’ and towards ‘opportunities.’
With this shift in focus it will allow us to find new meaning in what’s happening around us. We can decide to look at a challenge as the very thing we need most to learn and grow. With an empowering meaning we can then take empowered action.
As a leader you should feel challenged. Challenges are exactly what you need to grow. Your challenges will make you better if you can see them as opportunities and learn from them.
